The Fragile Daughters
I miss the fragile daughters of the rich
with all their part-time jobs and full-time dreams,
training to dance or act, prepared to switch
from course to course while still one vision gleams
beyond negotiations and phone-calls:
"Two hours I fought with Daddy, but he seems
to understand..." The cheque arrives, the walls
resound with projects for "a truly new
theatre, radical enough to cause
the damned Establishment to choke, turn blue
and die, it only needs one well-timed blow..."
Months pass, she rents a villa with a view
and nothing's staged. Where do those young girls go?
Some marry, some sell sandwiches or bitch
about Artistic Differences. I know
of one who builds birdhouses, others ditch
us all and disappear, a handful throw
their lives away: "I scorn a world in which..."
I miss the fragile daughters of the rich.
