Small Items of Power
Wallet, credit cards, TV remote control,
Wristwatch, mobile phone.... He wants to hold them all,
Understands the importance they have in our lives.
And him only eighteen months old. Everyone nods and smiles,
Says it was much the same with their kids.
One of my mum’s favourite stories
Is about me grabbing her purse, opening it,
Coins rolling all over the supermarket
Like drops of spilt mercury.
This morning, he drags my car alarm fob and key
From the dressing table. He dances and jangles them
Like a witch doctor with a magical charm.
I start with, ‘Please. Daddy’s’. Soon it’s, ‘Do as you’re told!’
I end up having to pull them from him.
He then shows me his growing grasp of this field
Refuses me a goodbye kiss.
