Emperors and Wars, Decrees:
the history is far beyond my grasp.
He felt the rags of scholarship
and saw the great frescoes slowly fading
in the cool of the dark churches, one monk
walking in the courtyard; he passed wild orchards,
vine and fig, and broken hermitages
with the sharp cone of the mountain over all.
Hours climbing, fighting flies and sweat, arrived
at dusk. All night cloud and rain blew through
the high, empty chapel. Morning broke clear
and headlong below he watched the sea
crawl silently over the huge rocks,
and a small grey bird watched him, the stranger.
