No Man
Tight-grasped by bosky-fingered No-Man’s-Heath
dad pulls into a lay-by, windscreen bleared.
Late August hawkweed’s scattered hydra-teeth . . .
Corsican pine fresh planted firs top-sheared.
Car bored - ‘I spy’ - a long man with a beard
ghosting the heath in full Victorian dress -
cape shifting as if spectral punters cleared.
Grave dinner-suit. Silk waistcoat, sprigged with cress,
he clambers clear-felled brash as light grows less.
I’m nine, don’t name this serendipity,
(wet against window-glass, my fingers press
tracing his windward eccentricity.)
I know ghosts, alive or dead, can map odd regions -
as modern men impersonate lost Roman legions.
