Losing Mr. Winter
I lost Mr Winter last May, she says
as though he’s somewhere back in the house,
the old van, or down the yard knee-deep
in the business, as he often was.
This fact lies in the leaves between us, October
whistling through its teeth wanting off,
the engine running and her grandson -
he can lift them two at a time - unloading
bags of compost for another season.
She was always the talker. He’d sit,
engine idling, one eye on her, counting,
letting his initial curl on the cheque.
Mister and missus to each other.
Was it - ? Yes. The heart of the matter.
