Liz Atkin
The Bunny Girl
Down the bottom of the covered market
she stands all day beneath them,
forty or fifty full pelt and scut
nose diving down into small white
plastic bags
tied with rabbit ear knots,
behind her
inside stall darkness a bearded
uncle with cats arse
pursed mouth, strips them
and cracks their skeletons
with a cleaver till
they are just a trayful
garnished with their own kidneys,
she has a smirch of blood
birthmark across her face
this girl who sells you
a corpse in a carrier bag
and has no time for
sentimentality or petting
despite her chalky blue feet
hutched in kidsize bunny slippers.
