Some Malepère Pebbles
Without strict geometry,
Without doubt old, very old,
Ancient too small a word,
Older than humanity
And all its projects.
To say you saw the Romans,
The Moors, the Visigoths,
Is plain folly,
Eyeless, brainless, you see nothing,
A dumb witness of history,
Stratiated, scarred, speckled,
Spat from the earth in flood and frost,
To hold you is to touch time,
To feel the substance of the planet,
The spinning sphere on which we steer
Our elliptical sway through the void.
'Malepère' from the Occitan 'Malo Peyro' - bad stone.
The Malepère massif lies in the heart of Cathar country near Carcassonne in the Aude, SW France.
