note to the other
Looking at you scrabbling
In that portmanteau you call a bag
Or just sitting after tea
Fagsmoke snaking over smeared dishes,
I know non-moments in you,
A soul who desires above all
The wheel and fire of miracles,
Of benisons for breakfast,
Of a cure for our modern forebodings,
That vague fear of vague fears
Which you cannot leave alone.
Look, in freedom, at the hedge
Crusted with spring green
And buds of blossom or the stick
I cut in that dark wood
To remind me of its unknown powers.
These are luminous things
Soaked with light all mankind
Has felt and will, despite powers,
Bombs and evil, still feel:
The point of life is in the living.
