The Evening
The evening comes like fire
Upon the rose.
Its burning edge lights up
The petal of the cloud,
And turns the hedge
To browns and golds.
The slow decay of light
Is like a memory of one
Who is too old;
Who cannot make the word
At will, who cannot still
Her mind to fill the nerve with joy
To thrill the boy or girl,
Who sit with her alone.
