ireland and scotland
The Big Music by robert garioch. 35p. modern scottish poets 6. caithness books, 21 high st, thurso, caithness. the latest book in the neat series supported by the scottish arts council. its a dialect set of poems which makes it difficult for a non-scotts to make headway but the large glossary in the back of the book helps. the most interesting item from my point of view is "the traivler" a translation from the anglo-saxon direct into scotts.
Capella (8) 15p. peter fallon, 30 thorncliffe park, rathgar, dublin 14. i've criticised this magazine in the past for using too many reprints from other mags but as its editor has pointed out, it is an irish magazine in the main, publishing stuff not seen before in eire. the current 40 page well printed issue doesnt carry any magazine reprints but does use 3 song lyrics already available on 1p sieves (liverpool scene & al stewart) which seems rather pointless. nonetheless the rest of the mag is good and lively, a strong mixture of local poets and ones from further away: jim burns/ mike & frances horovitz/ kennelly/ james simmons/ justin mccarthy/ frank ormsby/ carr/macsweeney/ david jaffin/ & alien ginsberg. well worth a read.
Ego (5) 8p. new editor hastings donnan. 5 camden st, belfast bt9 6at. at last the belfast mags, and there are quite a few of them, start to mention the troubles around them ... but only casually as if it wasnt all that important. this mag, changed a lot from the earlier more literary ego's under terri hooley, is solid in the underground paper tradition: george Jackson, oz trial, info, songs, one or two rather bad poems, etc etc. good use of colour in production but still quite a way to go.
Envoi (42) j.c. meredith scott, 21 windsor st, dundee, dd2 1 bn. a close grouped friendly poetry mag. small & printed with much editorial comment. the poetry is mainly dull & unexciting, but not always, gems do shine amidst the dark. tully potter/ birney/ mckinley/ etc.
Id (4) 5p. terri hooley, 5 camden st, belfast bt9 6at. "belfast's only non cultural literary mag" too little direct social comment to be really u/g. newspaperformat containing a few comic strips, short stories from andrew darlington/ lawrence upton/ d.h.w.grubb/ etc/ plus a few poems. the idea behind the mag is a sound one but it needs a stronger direction & a higher standard.
Ma Boheme (5) 10p. Jim morrisson. 456 maryhill rd, glasgow n.w. a long awaited issue this one, seems to have lost a fair bit of the promise the mag held in earlier issues but still a pretty reasonable mag. a mixture of prose & poetry incl: tom mcgrath's rimbaud translation/ owen davis/ alan spence's neo-burroughs stuff/ connors/ pat galvin on pound/ cartoons/ etc.
*Mac (6) 10p. tommy conkie jnr. 27 mochrum ave, maybole, ayrshire. a large mimeo with a new direction due maybe to ronnie barr, the new joint editor. a fair issue in all, a mixture of poetry, prose and some rather odd graphics that could have been done without. incl: steve morris/ w.t. gregory/ mike kemp/ william wantling/ tom mcgrath/ john kirkland/ etc.
Yel Reis is a small mag, underground paper & poetry book distributor run by peter stinson for the n. ireland area. catalogue available from 129 money rea rd, comber, belfast.
