Versions and Perversions
Brother
Traveling through many peoples and over many seas,
I have come to pay my last respects to you,
and to endow you with your final present
and speak in vain to your mute ashes, brother,
since fortune has taken you away from me,
alas poor brother harshly torn from me.
Yet now in the meantime please accept
these time-honored and funereal gifts,
soaked as they are with many a brotherly tear,
and now forever hail and farewell, brother.
