from The Book of Mormon
Bank Holiday.
We’re sitting down to tea,
the Roses match on BBC
Two, an Audrey
Hepburn on ITV,
when he knocks. Twice.
Mum pops an extra slice
of thick cut white
under the grill (it’s so much nicer
than wholemeal) and tries
to look casual.
Tinned fillets of smoked mackerel,
iceberg lettuce, several
kinds of stewed fruit, the ephemeral
tastes of summer. Shall
we answer it?
In good faith, we don’t.
Dad turns the TV low, bites
in half a radish. Succulent
isn’t the word. Nor was it sweet.
