The Wounded Deer: Fourteen Poems after Frida Kahlo
by Pascale Petit.
Smith/Doorstop Books, The Poetry Business, The Studio, Byram Arcade, Westgate, Huddersfield HD1 1ND £3.00.
Pascale Petit is an impressive talent, also in this series. In The Wounded Deer: Fourteen Poems after Frida Kahlo troubled sexual perceptions and transformations to art forms with painful often violent images are explored, 'the room bends like a bus hit by a tram. / It wobbles. Straightens. / The steel rod piercing my pelvis / pulls itself out...' to 'I place my hand in the hole / behind my breasts, / / feel the half I've had to make do with.// Strange how it keeps beating, / turning blood to paint.' These are fourteen poems after the artist, Frida Kahlo. Actional lines giving leaps in perception and strange angles complement the sense of painterly imagery, e.g. in Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot: 'These gold leaves are the few he brought back - / they still hum many years / after my body has cooled...' This is strong, exciting poetry that penetrates to the heart of experience and gives implicit insight into art, using original and telling imagery. '...Or that my face in full sunlight / can rip open / to release the flames / of the bird-of-paradise flower' (from Self-Portrait with Monkeys).
