Eyes in a rear-view mirror
Dancing blue, fringed with gold-rimmed glass,
A spectacle to brighten the tedious morning drive,
Working magic into momentary meetings
At a green and amber and red rendezvous.
A face half hid by auburn hair, half glancing sideways,
As eyes strain to tentative contact
And we wait car width, side by side,
For red to change to amber and to green.
And then you were gone - auburn and gold and blue
Into the lane-filled, traffic-clogged distance.
I can but pray that later or another day
For repeated red, amber, green and hopeful rendezvous.
