Across The Border
There was the border guard who stamped
our passports 1929 instead of 1999.
Our laugh: seventy years in Hungary
in just one day.
There was the café in Fertörakos
where the owner gazed with longing across the border
at Austria’s modern buildings.
There was Heviz near Lake Balaton,
where we breast-stroked through the heated pool,
out into minus two November.
There was the barman mixing fruit juice and champagne,
the money flowing faster into the till
than he could clean the glasses.
And there was you meeting him after his shift,
the two of you out by the lake –
the fog that came so cheap
and wiped out everything.
