The Long Game
She’s past mid-point,
teeth showing their workings
like old factories.
He notices his beard
grows in white now,
the moustache still black.
Lately she’s getting lighter,
the fat turning to liquid
beneath her thin skin.
They’re looking both ways,
the kids they were, the old
man and woman coming through.
Some weekdays, they let
the central heating bank up,
play out their final cards,
the last shameless inventions
they kept quiet until now.
They’re hooked by few anchors
but houses and what happens here:
him driving her further
up the iron bed, the beat
of it holding her back
from starting to die, all this wet life,
the end of the beginning.
