Tilt
The baby hovers by the ceiling,
thirty-eight weather balloons
moored between rafters.
She gurgles and kicks in her harness,
as if she were tiptoeing in her walker
across the kitchen-tile floor
or strapped into a stalled baby swing.
But how did they arrive at thirty-eight?
By trial runs with a sack of potatoes
of equivalent weight, or balloon by balloon,
until the sitting baby rose to her feet,
another, until she floated elbow height.
One more, as she smiled at eye level.
Then another, and another,
until she rose beyond ladder, camera
and the artist’s outstretched arms.
