There could have been a savage burning there too.
No fire escapes, no way down
an inner well of white tiles and a few
patches of struggling ivy. High
in that hotel room one month before
the New York Terror this is what he thought
who'd never thought such things before.
Was it the heat lapping white bodies
in fiery simulacra through the night? Or
dream input to some deeper layer
of world imagination? He couldn't say.
Yet knew 'in event of fire' there'd be no escape.
Next day, quietly reading Le Figaro
in the cushioned foyer, insomnia's angst no more
in the safe death of daytime Paris,
he attended to the usual failed prophecies of journalism.
