The Birches
I find her in the garden, hunched on the bench
wearing the white nightdress, all collar and cuffs,
I gave her last Christmas. The red lunch-box clenched
close as a kitten that threatens to run off.
Hands sallow from the turmeric she's used to
dye her hair. I wrap her in the tartan rug
we always took on picnics. My What have you
got there, Mum? met only with a stare, a shrug.
I click the plastic clasp to see the things she
carries - pipe-cleaners, a bobbin, rusty bike bell,
a bookmark, a pebble, some foreign currency,
shocking pink lipstick, a battery, a shell.
Nothing of any use. These beloved things.
I hold her hand until it's time to go in.
