John Younger
Out of True
Mine workings in Staffordshire
subsided and misaligned this bar room,
so that a bottle laid lengthwise
on a table, rolls uphill -
apparent disorder, out of true.
Deep levels have also shifted in me,
though the surface seems unaltered,
except somewhere a plumb line hangs askew,
while down in the darkness things give way
with trembling creaks and groans.
Not enough pints sunk yet
to be drunk, but by closing time
it’ll be as if a pulled string
sets every wrong angle right
and brings into true my skew-whiff self.
