After Her Mate's Death
She bounded up the crest, rear-end white.
Rain-candle.
Cloud numb, unlimber behind her flight
- the red deer.
Beloved waterborn, fable of the storm,
bearded clearhorn nearing the brow of mountain.
Single hawk, grouse at rest,
fallow slug on the path.
Single clipper hauling the bay
through mist. No ark this Knoydart.
The forever flood of rain stinks the air.
Lonely nature.
Her spectre of wind in the distance,
her imagined glossy hooves
kissing the menses of crumbled hill-stone.
All the hills, the phlegmatic rains,
are slumbering whales.
Scrabbling past gummy shafts
of baleen fossilized with green plaque
she felt like Jonah entering the foul range.
