The Children in the Cauldron
Not that life is so momentous it must fire
from her time-locked skin-held self
nor that there’s a meaning
in light years of silence
sounding through her alone
nor that things are not, quite
but slither jelly-like
till gloved and hatted in lines
nor even to honour a snowdrop or a sky
or hone a lonely cry to find an echo
but only to see what happens
when they splutter and scramble
out of the seething
lollop and flow into being,
new in the world.
