Easter Beans
Budded oaks fringe
that plot of cow-red ground,
caringly tilled and raked,
blooded and boned,
ready for spring planting.
Trilling on its thin legs
his robin finds the spade.
From his worn tweed coat
he prises the first
packet of seed,
lets it breathe
and fills his palm
with fat Easter beans,
drops two in each hole,
pulls in the earth,
adds water, pauses.
His tea has appeared
on the bench arm.
He sits heavily,
catching the glimpse
of a skirt rounding
the kitchen wall,
closes his eyes,
closes his eyes, gulps.
