The Carbreaker's Children
The carbreaker’s children
wear oily sweatshirts and jeans;
have boxes under their beds
chock-full of rusty nuts and screws.
They wipe their fingers on their sleeves
and play out back with sticky black tyres -
climbing inside them or rolling them
swaggering across the yard.
There are small parts of machinery
full of clicking,
a red plastic car seat
that’s split its sides with yellow foam
and an old car radio, sprouting
striped wires.
When other children come near
the carbreaker’s children
lounge around.
They keep spanners in their pockets.
They stare, with black glinting eyes.
