On the Morning Sleeper
Naked you, sleeping in the morning light:
this early brightness that sweeps down
from ninety million miles away to say
it’s time to face another day of endless stuff.
I envy you, shut eyes, snakes of black hair
flufferling in the breeze of your mouth,
hand under your cheek, breasts as sleepy
as the curve of thigh, as its dark shadow.
It’s too bright, too late, too light for me, now:
morning’s silent trumpets made me rise
and having risen I can only wait for you,
check the coffee machine is set, is primed.
