Night Rain, St. Ives
The rain’s lost loose talk
slips through a chink in my dream, slides
from the rheumy eyes
of my great-grandfather,
a sea-captain
now in safe harbour.
I console him with rum
and saffron cake, smell
the salt on his beard as he
launches out on a song
roaring of mariners
battling wild seas.
So I let myself drift
on a grass-green tide,
high-tail it beyond Zennor,
serenade him, before he returns
to a grumble of bones
in the rotting timbers
where his voyage ended;
then I turn in my bed
to the patter and mutter
of soft Cornish rain.
