Midwinter
You can hear the cold tightening the frost
until it gives way, leaving a raw silence
that hardens to a standstill in your flesh,
where blood slows to a chill acceptance.
You are too far into the weather to turn back.
The certainties of science are like a clash
of shadows and all your subtleties are really
superstitions. Consciousness is what you
cling to, even in this deteriorating season
you believe it is gifted because it feels so
real. You tell this to yourself and to the tree
outside your window, you have grown to love.
