Windmill at Sarre
Black-hunched, truncated,
Gagged against the wind
by sealing timbers,
a giant rook
on a rural chessboard.
It has been gutted,
the huge digestive stones removed,
redundant as the wind
that pushed the sails to their
wrenching, vibrating turns,
replaced by gentler sounds
of mice and owl squabbling
for their own survival.
It shares the same horizon
with the cooling towers
that stand, subject
to the power station
which supplies the latest energy.
At harvest, the preying combines
like praying manti spew the golden jets,
circling the ancient mill,
checking the old warrior
with speed and efficiency;
dipping their heads as they pass
with respect for past achievement
and its place in the land’s continuity.
