Heatwave
If this heat had a colour
it would surf against the pastels
of Lavenham like a scarlet sea.
Suiting its pace to ours
it clingwraps around us, gloving
our held hands in moisture
they swim in. Moving briefly apart.
We stand under a bedroom
stretching out of the house
that doesn’t bat an eyelid
when the juggernauts judder by
also intended for ever
the wool church built for the lambs
of God that throws off light
like a Venetian palace in the heavy air.
It’s a different country inside,
where we cool our heels
in the stillness and need no
prayer book’s prompting to give thanks.
