A Sadness
Perhaps once a month I would visit.
The interval was longer in winter
when the snow fell in that same area
of our lives, spreading a virgin sheet
of conscious awareness that did little to help
in pressing the door-bell.
My friend later told me
not to be so abrupt in my leaving,
but he hadn’t to sit telling lies to his mother,
which made relations,
their lips stretched thinly,
accept that I, an executive of a fast growing company,
never ceased to have mother in mind.
Only, the last time I saw her
she turned from the doorway that leads to the kitchen,
as I glanced at my watch, and quietly said,
“If you’re meeting someone of importance
or going somewhere for lunch, please,
don’t let me keep you.”
And I rose from the chair, studied the garden
through a rain washed window,
then left, though I had no one to meet
and no place to go.
