Timetable
Every year on the same day we discover
all faiths insist God lives for ever
and ask how long for ever is
although we never say
it's as if we know
and the answer's obvious
or there is no answer,
but even our single
virgin universe
in which we wait
has a life
someone can count.
Every year we reach the hour
in which we will consider
how long a day for God might be
assuming for the moment
there is a God who lives for ever
and decide a million years
is much too short,
and though for us our eighty years or so
seems endless early on
and then becomes a modest ration
we are alive right now
it's all there is,
unless we can
forget remembering
forget to wait
it will always be
too late.
