Bird of the Moor
Bird on the moor the man said,
but I only half-captured the words.
Floating free of contextual cage
they could have been something read
from a volume of Georgian verse,
except for his tone of near-rage,
more suited to insult or curse.
You heard what I said? he went on.
I done bird on the Moor, and that’s true.
I know more about doing tough time
than any old screw or young con
you’ll see among this fucking crew.
So stick with me, son, and you’ll find
your stretch will go easy for you.
