October Homecoming
When leafdrift persuades my gaze to venture
beyond its consistently moving curtain,
the sun ignores the protective presence of our lawnside oak
and highlights her silhouette as she trails
the shopping trolley across the leaf strewn central reservation.
Devouring the excitement of seeing her
I watch her walking to the gate.
Anticipate her door opening sigh. Youthfull looks. Fresh smell.
Need to be putting the kettle on.
But I'm ahead of her, kettle filled and door already open
as I welcome her with 'Hi'.
Suddenly the kitchen is bustling with coatpeg hookings,
trolley unloadings and cupboard doors opening and closing.
Minutes later we are together. Sipping, saying nothing,
but mutually enjoying the bright morning light,
while inwardly I'm confessing that after thirty years together
I still couldn't tell you if she takes one spoonful
of brown sugar with her coffee, or two.
