Smith
Some like it hot, you strike it hot:
Straight from the forge, puffed up dusty ruby
Licked with flames sparking yellow.
Belting off slag, round to flat
Hammering out electric hail,
Pulling twists, shaping curves. Thirty five years
Of hand to eye, frost to fire,
Summer and winter hard toil.
The anvil still rings; echoing pitch perfect
In concert performance for an apprentice,
As indeed it did for you
Before your grown-up children were born.
Muffled, subdued by mild steel, brittle free
Shaped between thin chimes
Of a ball peen back beat artistry.
Thousands of mornings levelling ash,
Drawing blue flames, awakening the cold
Shape-shifting Phoenix.
Some like it hot, you strike it hot
From anthracite to running gold.
