Drying Out: Funeral Home, Pawhuska, Oklahoma
Don't mind him - he don't bite.
Still as a pause,
a cocktail of arsenic and air
propped against the wall,
downcast eyes arrowed along
the barrel of a pinched nose.
Elmer dries out,
holds a semblance of himself,
turns brown as old sellotape
but hangs together,
projects the taut links of his spine
but doesn't let them through,
keeps his bones housed
and hinted at.
He has feet like Jesus
think the kids.
They picture them punctured,
a fence post nail
driven in to the hilt
but not when shod with skates,
wheeled out amidst laughter
into the dangerous sun,
his tinderbox heart not in it.
