Since I stopped fighting with the grey patches
in my hair, I look into the glass and see
my father and grandmother, never me
alone, always an ancestor watching
over my shoulder, close-lipped, catching
me in the most private of soliloquies,
grooming me for a seniority
that's hard to merit.
My mind rarely latches
onto the future, shies away from tea-leaves,
fortune tellers, tarot card readings;
I’d much rather look backwards through my face
at the frowning brow of the child who tried
to unravel curious tangles in her necklace
using only a pin and those two good eyes.
