Where To Next
The faces on the television
speak a different language
than the one I know.
Maybe it was that way too
in my own country.
Background noises layered
behind voices at my sides.
Home is just memories of moments
in other places.
Half drunk at noon on a beach in Mazatlan
with a black haired girl whose eyes mirrored my smile.
A floating bridge across Lake Washington
that led to where my grandmother died.
Seated on the hood of my Karman Ghia
looking out over Portland
from behind a rusted guardrail.
A punk song on the car stereo
acting like emotional crack cocaine.
My back tense, asking,
where to next?
I never thought it would be here,
listening to a tongue I don’t understand.
