The Colony
“In his world” wrote Pound “the ant’s a centaur”
and in ours, a Malthusian metaphor.
But with multi-faceted eyes
and short sight, how do they see us?
They’ve jaws, but no speech, interaction
by antennae, touch, taste, smell,
blood colourless, exoskeletal, lungless,
they’re too alien to cherish.
So, deploying insecticide
as a weapon of mass destruction,
I aerosol the horde determinedly,
with some regret, but no choice.
