Sunset, Sea Road
The sky howls with colour
behind the spire of the Jesuit church
which overawes our houses.
It is April, a Sunday evening;
he phones me from the coffee-shop
and I dash out into the swirling street.
All Henry Street is beaten gold;
Sea Road dissolved,
all the Bible promised us as children
is here underfoot – no need to die –
Heaven has tumbled into this street
while the charity-shop window
shows that everything will be provided,
its reflection patiently continuing through the night rain.
