The Idol
Dressed up in blue, she stood above the world,
The July gardens and the people feting her.
While what she awaited was seen nowhere,
Unhurrying men in admiration strolled :
And of no moment by what name they called
Such animation. This was the hour
Of their loitering carelessness to stare—
She waiting in the park with love untold
Which freezes her to stone. The space is small
Where the wet leaves shift and the boughs enlace
This rain-washed idol of a corrupt plot,
And the tight ivy-bands unhurrying crawl
Across the breast and blindly shut the face
Where her wide eyeballs stare their secret out.
