Ridicule
They were sniggering when I sat down.
The waiter grinned as he placed the soup
on the blue tablecloth in front of me.
I looked at my spoon as I dipped it in.
I slowly raised it, full, to my mouth
but halfway there my nose took over -
too late, though, to stop me tasting soap.
I spat out, back into my plate.
The splash went over the tablecloth.
They were choking with laughter now.
I looked at the growing stain
feeling my eyes fill and my cheeks redden.
I sat there till my feet took over.
They were guffawing as I closed the door.
Matthew Sweeney’s latest collection, A Smell of Fish (Cape Poetry), was shortlisted for the Forward Prize 2001. He is the judge of this year’s Bedford Open Poetry Competition.
