French
I find it hard to store a beautiful woman
in my head without losing her
after a few seconds. Fragments
piece apart, memories prove
unfaithful, inconstant.
I imagine Mrs Coll chalking French
declensions
on the blackboard, her blonde hair
shaken free from its ponytail. I unravel
the silk scarf around her slim neck
as we copulate beneath the war memorial
and suddenly her face has gone.
I try again. I kiss Mrs Coll' s lips,
which were on the thin side
yet sensual, but the lips now belong
to Grace Kelly and taste of porcelain.
In any case, I am slipping out
of the picture. Frank Sinatra has muscled in,
sometimes even Bing gets to croon
in her ear.
