The Wrong Train
He can't remember where he wanted to go,
but he's suddenly sure he's on the wrong train
that's headed for Milan, Madrid or Monaco,
and there's no one to ask, no one
who speaks his language, whatever
that is. The country chugs by.
He'll be met by his mother or his wife
or by his business associate, Herr Weber,
who'll buy him cognac in a street café
and tell him of "breath-stopping opportunities"
to make mountains of money,
and he'll say, "Yes, yes, but who am I?"
Herr Weber will smile, "Marcel, you like your little joke!"
He'll light a cigar, disappear in blue smoke.
