Pascal’s Note
Terrible adolescence.
We watch breasts, hair grow,
the body is suddenly heavy and dirty,
awkward, the senses stir.
I too shall permit
no one to say: best days of your life.
Days of teenage acne and anguish,
a time of hunger, wartime shortages,
worn-down heels, pages with
margins written in, lack of paper,
the dull roar of bombers,
the cold that chaps the feet,
the rats of fear in your guts,
and hunger, always hunger, hunger at the hub
of all things, animal-jawed hunger
that strips bones to reveal
the ligneous outline of a head
where a fixed expression is all that remains.
