Marika
Marika walks barefoot on rough-cut floorboards,
clips her waist-length wavy hair back tight,
cleans for mum, chops cabbages for dinner,
sings her sisters off to sleep each night
village life has nothing more to offer,
state school’s over now she’s turned sixteen,
she dreams herself a city job in high-heels
selling sparkly tops and denim jeans
shops for make-up at the small cantina
with Lev she gets sometimes for washing cars,
in a mirror shines her eyes with moonbeams
and slowly paints her nails with little stars
