Joan Poulson
Kitten
He dances across the table, black
dandelion clock. She’d been holding him
when the planes droned over
hugged him, tight, staring out
at the sky
like a photograph, like day;
Bonfire Night above the docks.
The house, doll’s house
- giant’s hand shaking it
snatching the front off.
She crushed him
stiff-armed
as they dressed her
slow motion
like the pictures; waited
for someone to take her away.
It was weeks before she’d let him go;
wound his key, stood him on the table,
released him for their admiration.
She circles, hands half-raised;
starts to shake, screams his name.
