Unseeing
Bright the eye
of the morning
lit with ten thousand
white dancers
dancing.
I saw them without looking.
Dull day after day behind
flawed panes,
so preoccupied
with what?
As if I were time's slave,
and not to work imperilled me,
and even to pause
were a crack in the pavement.
Saying to myself, distracted:
in a moment,
just a moment,
I will attend to them.
When I turned
all the dancers were gone.
Not one
ghost.
Just leaves rusting,
a furious squirrel
grubbing
at the foot of the turkey oak.
