Once seen
i.m. Edie Sedgwick 1943-1971
It's Poussin, okay, but what struck me first
was the controlling bastard with the smile.
I thought 60's, Studio 54,
the sycophants, and Edie all the while
believing Warhol God; that she's adored.
Here, a satyr in the frame, thick lips pursed,
must have her, has laid claim, and she, coerced,
her hand outstretched for help that never came,
seems mindless like the infant sleeping, thumb
in mouth, oblivious to dancers feet.
Poor little rich girl, still 28, numbed
by Art, the silver screen - no part complete
without her child-Iike pose, her looks fair game -
has overdosed too late on Warhol's fame.
