Harbour Entrance
Steel sabre toothed canines they stand
And prong the scudding sky, brace
The harbour’s mouth where
Pewter sea gulps and gargles forth
Stalagmitic masts that ricochet
Wire twanged sheets,
Wind-spin the gyrating yachts’ moorings
That yaw and pitch.
Abrasive the sea decays all hulls.
High tide, low tide, next spring tide,
Hasten whilst shipshape
Leave the quayside,
Slip away through ebb and flow.
Westerly winds whistle
Wildly, shrilly, cast-off pipes.
Paean surf froths, liquidacious opus,
Cyan starved eyes from clammy pale skin;
Finned, mithrill, reptile tail agitates
The broiling waters: She lies-in-wait,
Smiles, licks her lips …
