Dove of Desire
The open fantail of the collared dove I almost caught
and killed with my windshield, driving the bog road
back from Clifden, was a luminous featherflash attached
to that soft strawberry-beige body that miraculously
stayed afloat, in flight, inches ahead of the machine
I shuddered with hope in, staring into the face of
something bad about to happen, that didn’t. Again, so,
I discover the distance between life lost and saved,
and the way desire may blaze for an instant, wishing the bird
out of harm’s way, and how this once, with only a wing
and a prayer to bank on, desire got what it wanted.
